Founded in 1984, after thirty years development, department of neurology is now a specialty with advanced technology, powerful technology force and reasonable talent structure. The department consists of nerve specialty clinic, special disease clinics(dysmnesia and Parkinson's disease clinic, cephalalgia clinic, epilepsy and sleep disorder clinic, muscle and peripheral nerve diseases clinic)，general ward, intensive care unit(ICU), and electrophysiologic examination room (EEG, EMG, VEP, and Transcranial Doppler). This department has 70 beds open for patients (including 7 of NICU). It is the Base of Cerebral Apoplexy Screening and Prevention of the NHFPC, the Training Base of Standardization for Resident Physician of NHFPC, and postgraduates training unit ofJiangsuUniversity. It provides different levels of education to international students, postgraduates, undergraduates and further education students.

The department (including electrophysiology examination room) now has twenty one doctors, including one with PhD degree, thirteen with master’s degree, seven with bachelor’s degree, eight with senior professional title, seven with junior professional title, and six with elementary professional title. Among them, there is one member of "333" Project in Jiangsu province(the third level), one cultivating object of “Six-kind Talent Peak” project in Jiangsu Province, one member of the Key Medical Talents of Zhenjiang, one master supervisor, and five members of national, provincial and municipal professional committees. In the nursing group, there is one nurse of pressure ulcer and stoma specialty, one nurse of theJiangsuprovincial clinical nutrition support specialty, and one nurse ofJiangsuprovincial ICU specialty.

While performing clinical treatment, the department is working on the basic and clinical scientific research of neurology. At present, the department has formed six major branches, namely cerebrovascular diseases (CVD), cephalalgia, neurological immune diseases, dyscinesia and neurodegenerative diseases, muscle and peripheral nerve diseases, as well as epilepsy and sleeping disorder. In recent three years, the department has presided over and participated in a more than ten scientific projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China, Jiangsu “333 Project”, “Six-kind Talent Peak” project in Jiangsu province, the Society of Neurology of Jiangsu Medical Association, Natural Science Foundation of Heilongjiang province, Municipal Social Development Project of Zhenjiang, the Key Medical Talents of Zhenjiang, and the foundation of Jiangsu University Medicine School. It has received scientific research fund over 500000 RMB. The scientific achievements have been granted three of the Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Zhenjiang, and one of the Prize of the Introduction of Innovative Medical Technology of Zhenjiang. The staff of this department has published more than 20 pieces of theses on SCI journals and other core periodicals. What is more, the staff have participated in the compilation of three books, namely The Planning Textbook for Undergraduates of National Medical Colleges and University--Neurology, The 12th Five-Year Plan ‘5+3’Planning Textbook For National Higher Education Clinical Medicine Major--Neurology, and The Prevention and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Diseases.

【Technical Features】

As one of the earliest neurological specialty inZhenjiang, the department has accumulated affluent clinical experience in the treatment of neurological diseases, and the clinical treatment standard and academic capacity of the department take the leading place inZhenjiang. Several new technologies and new projects conducted by the department have fulfilled the blanks inZhenjiangand reached advanced level inJiangsuprovince. The treatment characteristics of the department are as follows:

1. Cerebrovascular Diseases: We have made a comprehensive set of standardization of early diagnosis, treatment, rescue and prevention of cerebrovascular diseases. And the clinical treatment standard of cerebrovascular diseases is the leading force inJiangsuprovince. ① We make 4 kinds of clinical pathway of cerebral infarction, namely thrombolysis, anticoagulation, defibrase and inhibition of platelet aggregation. The rescue success rate of severe cerebrovascular diseases is over 95% for many years. ② We have established the emergency green channel for cerebral infarction patients and performed the only ultra-early stage rt-PA intravenous thrombolytic therapy in Zhenjiang. ③ To those patients with ischemic cerebrovascular diseases who missed the time window, we offer them human urinary kininogenase to set up three-level collateral circulation, rescuing ischemia penumbra and reducing the loss of nerve function. ④ We have made deep research into the post-stroke depression and proven that hyperhomocysteinemia is related to post-stroke depression. The application of both medical and psychological intervention has reached satisfactory effect. ⑤ We use digital subtraction arteriography (DSA) to make judgment of the degree of vascular stenosis of cerebral infarction patients and perform carotid stenting in cooperation with neurosurgery. ⑥working together with Rehabilitation Department, we make ADL, NIHSS, mRS scale assessment for cerebral infarction patients and apply individualized rehabilitation to help patients’ recovery to the largest extent. ⑦ as the only screening base cerebral apoplexy, we also undertake the training of cerebrovascular diseases for basic-level medical staffs annually, while finishing the screening missions. ⑧At present, we have assumed four scientific projects supported by national, provincial and municipal foundations and published more than 20 pieces of theses.

2. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer disease and Parkinson's disease: We have set up clinic for Alzheimer disease and Parkinson's disease and made deep research into the pathogenesis and prevention. We have been granted two of the Third Prize of Zhenjiang Science and Technology Progress, published more than 10 pieces of thesis, and undertaken two projects of neurodegenerative disorders.

3. Cephalalgia: We have performed outpatient specialty of cephalalgia, set up records of outpatients, and achieved positive social effects. We have undertaken two of the municipal projects related to cephalalgia and published more than 10 pieces of theses.

4. Epilepsy: We have established clinical treatment for epilepsy. With the application of 24-hour dynamic and video EEG, we conduct the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of coma. We also monitor the blood concentration of antiepileptic drugs, ensuring the safety and efficiency of medication.

5. Electrophysiology room: As the only nerve electrophysiology detection institute with official authentication for impairment evaluation inZhenjiang, the EMG and EEG are conducted by specialty doctors with senior professional title, ensuring the authenticity of impairment evaluation. At the same time, it offers the basis for correct diagnosis of motor neuron diseases, muscle diseases and peripheral neuropathy in clinical treatment.

6. Nursing: we have an experienced nursing group. As to the nursing of critically ill patients, especially the airway management, we have developed characteristic treatment and the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcer meet the international level.

Yu Ming, academic leader, dean of the Department of Neurology, dean of the Teaching and Research Office of Neurology, chief doctor, vice professor, master supervisor, is the senior visiting scholar of the University of New Mexico (UNM) of the US, the member of “333”Project in Jiangsu province(the third level), the member of "Six-kind Talent Peak" project in Jiangsu Province, the member of the Key Medical Talents of Zhenjiang, the member of Nerve Regeneration Society of Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, the member of Neurology Society of Jiangsu Medical Association, the member of Neurology Society of Jiangsu Medical Doctor Association, the member of Cerebral Vascular Disease Group of Neurology Society of Jiangsu Medical Association, and the member of Gerontology Society of Zhenjiang Medical Association. What is more, Yu Ming is also the editor of Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research, and the Special reviewer of Neural Regeneration Research. Besides his clinical treatment of neurology, he participates in the research of Alzheimer's disease, cerebrovascular disease, Parkinson's disease and migraine, and he has presided over and participated in more than 10 national, provincial and municipal projects and receives research fund more than 600000 RMB. He has won two of the Third Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Zhenjiang, and one of the First Prize of the Introduction of Innovative Medical Technology. He has taken part in the compilation of two medical books, and published over 60 pieces of theses, with four pieces indexed by SCI.

Zhang Xiaolin, vice dean of the Department of Neurology, vice dean of the Teaching and Research Office of Neurology, chief doctor, is the member of Neurology Society of Zhenjiang Medical Association. His main research fields are cerebrovascular diseases and migraine. He has presided over and participated in several provincial and municipal projects and published over 10 pieces of theses.
